Brokenness

If Christianity is real, then it should work. Christianity is not just some philosophy or abstract set of ideas; it is a relationship with the living God. It is real and it works. But we must define what we mean when we say ‘it works’. Do we mean it will make you popular and beautiful and everything will go your way? Do we mean that it will connect you with God so that you have all your prayers answered? What does it mean?
Jesus told the Apostle Paul: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Or maybe when we say Christianity works, we mean that God’s power working in us is what counts—that rather than being ‘all that’ we become nothing so that Christ power may rest on us. That is what Paul is saying. Jesus said it this way:

“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”
Brokenness is the knowledge that we need God. Brokenness is knowing that our self-sufficiency is poison to us. It is meekness; but meekness is not defined as mousiness or putting yourself down. Meekness means ‘not fighting against God’. It means surrendering yourself to Him; picking up your cross. But we don’t like brokenness; it is often despised as a weakness. We prefer to be self-contained and self-sufficient; but we must turn from them to follow Him.
